GovHack is a two-day event held simultaneously around Australia to create working prototypes with government data, and to help find new ways to solve the challenges facing government and contributes towards social and economic development. GovHack includes a number of locations around Australia with participation from Federal, State and Local governments. Each year GovHack counts up to 1,000 participants, 200 volunteers and 100 data mentors.
The first GovHack in 2009 was a government sponsored initiative from the Gov 2.0 Taskforce run by John Allsop and Web Directions. Since 2012, GovHack has been an annual volunteer run competition and community development event.
Each year, GovHack finishes with the Red Carpet Awards in a major Australian city to celebrate award winners in up to 30 categories.
